For a fresh correspondent, arriving by night in devastated Bay St. Louis is an unsettling experience.
The air is muggy and warm, and the full moon is filtered by passing high clouds. But the car headlights reveal glimpses of destruction: A truck in a waterlogged ditch, a flattened shopping center and piles and piles of debris.
The Disaster Recovery Center in the Coast Electric building on Highway 90 is deserted for the night, save for a few enormous brown cockroaches that skitter away when the lights are switched on.
On one wall is posted an uplifting message titled "The Gulf Will Rise Again" and paraphrased slightly from Mississippi's most famous literary son:
"I believe man will not merely endure, he will prevail. He is immortal, not because he alone among the creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion, sacrifice and endurance." -- William Faulkner.

We certainly hope and pray for the best for the future endeavors of these resilient people who are truly inspirational heroes; who in spite of what has passed, they continue to move ahead. Fighting off the mosquitos and other insects, dealing with losing most if not everything they had and not knowing what tomorrow may bring, they continue to dig through the rubble, to create a new life with dreams of tomorrow that for them will become a reality.
If you can dream
If you can perceive
and you believe
you can achieve
Our prayers are with you all.
