The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally known as a day to shop.
We went to a free toy giveaway at Calvary Chapel, so I guess in a way we were shopping.
There were hundreds of people there. They had face painting for the kids, pictures with Santa, those blow up jumping things and a bike giveaway. I really wanted to win but I didn't.
Still, it was a good fun day.

Reaching out ... for free
I had the opportunity to assist the people of Slidell and New Orleans, Louisiana on a relief mission with my church in Orem, Utah(Christ Evangelical Church). The devastation was unbelievable. The North Shore looked like a movie set from a feature film entitled "The Last Days". I was amazed to meet so many wonderful people in the area who were determined to move on with their lives despite the destruction laying at their feet.
I admire you "survivors" of Hurricane Katrina. God Bless you!

I also volunteered in Slidell for a few days and made a side trip to Waveland. My trip was much too short and I felt I didn't do nearly enough for all the people my group encountered.
It breaks my heart every evening when I see the news stories and things still look basically the same as they did when I was there 6 weeks after the hurricanes. I think the pictures have much more impact if you've actually been there and seen it for yourself.
I am still trying to help in small ways from my home in Western New York and many members of my church family as well as the community have offered their help as well.
I was truly amazed at the positive attitude most Katrina Survivors had even though to quote one of them, "There is no light at the end of the tunnel yet."
Since I have been home, I have found there are many people that still want to help, but aren't sure how. Of course there is the Red Cross and other agencies, but people don't see exactly where their money goes.
This is one cause I will continue to work for and thankfully I have contacts in the Slidell area that can help the rest of us actually see that what we do is needed and appreciated.

I agree with GSP from NY. The picutres from the area is one thing, but to see the devastation in person is overwhelming. I think right now the people need help getting roofs over their heads and out of tents. Yes, many families are still in tents. Building supplies and constructions workers of all kinds is what is needed most.

Better days will be ahead for all of you..I'm glad you were able to have some fun, especially for the children..God bless you all...
