These words are often used jokingly. However, its no joke if you’re an artist who has lost everything -- home, studio, art materials and equipment -- everything you need to make a living.
Many of our artists are living and working elsewhere. Many others are here struggling to repair or rebuild homes and studios. In either case, most have lost the wherewithal to create work or the venues to exhibit work.
The Arts, Hancock County is helping artists in several ways. We have set up a special Disaster Relief Fund in our local bank. All donations go directly to artists in need. We have also established a site to receive donations of art supplies. We will take anything, new or used. Remember our artists are not only painters but writers, photographers, sculptors, musicians, jewelers, potters and dancers. Our community is rich in the diversity of art…we just need the tools to get back to work.

Some thoughts on donations
I was in the Bay Wednesday to take care of something and while there I drove down to Main Street and by where the cottage use to be that I rented when I first moved here many years ago. It was like my heart broke all over again. What a special place the Bay/Waveland area is. I stopped my car on Main St. and remembered just a year ago I was there at the Christmas fund raiser (tour of homes) for the Friends of the Animal Shelter. I know that many of them were involved in the arts community and what wonderful, kind people they are. I pray each day that things will come together very soon.

It Sickens Me!!! I live in an area of Florida that survived serious damage in recent hurricanes. I am no stranger to hurricanes. My gripe is why are there no talk of State and Federal Bonds to rebuild or build a State of Art levy system in New Orleans and areas devastated by Katrina and the previous hurricanes?? They did it in Holland. Why cannot the right and most Modern Secure engineering protective System be built around New Orleans and Biloxi Missippi??; After all this is the Great USofA. In my view it will take Federal,States and Public participation to properly rebuild and build adequate protective structures for the Missippi and Delta coasts. Much of this country's trade and food supplies depend on this region.---Another Gripe--The Police of New Orleans and much of Louisana need to be brought under Federal control and supervision!! If a Grizzly can be controlled with a tranquilizing shot. Why cannot a mentally disturbed young man flashing a 3"knife be quited without shooting him. His killers are in my view criminals themselves, and their Police Chief-a White Washer. Human life and Human Rights need to be respected in New Orleans. A retired teacher with no weapon held and beaten by Police for asking a simple question!! What Examples are WE setting to the Outside World?---Yet we raise such a stink, and send our brave military men to prison, for the harsh and unapproved methods of intorrigation of bomers and cut-throat kidnappers in the Middle East. These things that I am seeing in the News; should not happen in this country, and without proper punishment of those responsible...These are no Example to set for the administration of a Free World.,and Civilized Government.
