WAVELAND, Miss. -- Shirley Corr fled Hurricane Katrina's rising waters seven months ago, escaping with her life. While that terrifying memory fades, it has been replaced by a nagging fear that her life, and her community will never recover.
Her situation is far from the most dire that Katrina wrought. While the storm surge flattened most of her neighbors' homes in the low-lying area near the beach in Waveland, it left the shell of her home standing.
The good news is that her flood insurance policy paid out $42,000, which will go some way toward restoring her house and replacing its contents. She's ready to begin now, with new windows and a new roof. And she is allowed to restore her home without worrying about more stringent new building codes because the home's frame is still standing.
The bad news is that her neighborhood is gone. Only a couple of people have returned. Some were renters, and unlikely to return. Others whose homes were demolished face the prospect of having to rebuild at much higher elevation, and many feel they can't afford it.
And the neighborhood is swampy and mosquito-infested -- a product, she is told, of broken water pipes in the neglected area.
For now, Corr, 70, and her dog Buffy share a FEMA trailer parked on her son's yard on higher ground in Waveland. But she longs for home — a home her late husband built for them decades ago and the place where her children grew up. The longing for home became especially acute when she was confined over the winter, suffering pneumonia.
An expensive pet surgery
Then Buffy needed surgery, ringing up a $2,500 bill that Corr is struggling to cover in month-by-month increments from her fixed income of $872 a month. The dog whimpers — for home, she says.
And there is in an ongoing battle with mold forming on the inside of her trailer walls.
"Now I do want to go home," says Corr. "This trailer — honey, I can’t wait to get out of this."
She is adamant that she won't move in with family, though her youngest son urges her to do so when he finished renovating his house. "I'm too independent," she protests.
Read previous story about Shirley Corr: Starting over, but where?
Sometimes Corr goes to church, which is held in a tent since the building was destroyed, and visits her three sons who remain in the area. But she's given up other pastimes, like the occasional game of cards with friends.
The landscape of wreckage weighs heavily on her. Even as Waveland and Bay St. Louis rebuild, it seems infuriatingly slow to her, to the point that she doesn't like to go out.
"Mostly I go to the grocery store and to the kids' (homes). Isn’t that terrible?" she says. "I just hate to get out. Every time you go out, it just makes you ... I can’t describe it. It gets worse and worse each time you look at it. I doubt if I’ll ever see this back to the way it was, or even half the way it was."
If you teach a man to build ...

I was part of a group from New Hampshire that did some work on Shirley's house. She is an incredible lady. I want her to know that we still remember her and the folks in Gulfport/Bay St. Louis in our prayers. I pray that the hope of Jesus Christ carries them from day to day.

You are a survivor of the kind of situation most Americans never have to face.
However, I believe God puts us in situations so we can show our love and faith in Him. When you are feeling down count your blessings. It is not my intention to preach but this is what has gotten me through the worst times of my life(my husband was murdered when I was 34). There is always light at the end of every rainbow and yours is coming. When that first blade of grass comes up or a flower appears from nowhere in your heart and mind KNOW that this is God showing you the promise of tomorrow and the wonderful joys that are coming your way!
I live far away from my family and sometimes I just ache to hold them or talk with them. I pray this does not sound cold but you don't have to look far to see someone far worse off than you!
Material things came be replaced but truly the memories of your home will always be within you. I am not trying to miminize your lost but I see situations as opportunities to show all my love for Jesus. Just think of the new people you will and have already meet. You are in my prayers, as well as all of the Katrina victims. Please let me know how I can send you some money to help with Buffy and if you can correspond with me I can not tell you I know how you feel but I can let you know what God has done for me. We just have to pass it along!
Love in Christ

While I can't imagine losing my home, I have had to put 2 of my best friends to sleep last summer. I, too, would like to help, even if just a little bit, with the vet bill. Please email me as well with the vet's name/address. Many blessings and hope that the future is brighter for you and Buffy.

I have been touched by so many of these posts, but these past few responses have brought tears to my eyes. The people in S. Mississipi have endured more than any of us can ever imagine. But they are shining examples of human courage and strength. I believe that God gives us this strength when we don't think we can go any further.
My husband was in Bay St. Louis in December and helped cook meals to serve to many families. There hasn't been a day since his return that he hasn't talked about the people and planning his return. He will be back in BSL next week, and this time he is bringing our son-in-law with him. His heart is truly touched by the people he served. Hold on...we won't forget about you!!!
P.S. I would also like the name and address of the vet to help out with the bill.

I found Shirley and she says to say thank you sooo much, it is so heartwarming to know that others care so much for someone they don't even know. Her Vet is Louisiana Vet Referral - 2611 Florida ST, Mandeville, LA 70448 and Dr. Charles West in Bay Saint Louis, 2016 Veningo Lane, BSL, MS 39520.
She says to let you know that her sweet doggie is in her lap now as I read your emails to her. You can send her a card if you wish.....108 N Street, Waveland, MS 39576
It just takes a minute to make someone's day. My inlaws are in Slidell so we share Shirley's anguish.

My service dog (11 times Buffy's size who sends Buffy a big nose rub) and I want to help with Buffy's bill as well. Thank you, Lea for posting the vet's address.
So many forget that one's 4-footed companions provided so much love to their humans and are integral part of one's life.
Great to see so many offering help. This lady did NOT need the heartbreak of losing her cherished companion after everything else.
Anyone have the vet's phone number if one wants to call the vet with a credit card? The mail down there is a bit iffy.

Andy, keep itching, it's your fate, for scoffing at the best part of human nature, the desire to help someone in need.

We all think we have something bad in our lives, then we see someone with it worse and know that if they can make it so can I. Shirly, I have a 9 year old daughter with exteme allergies. She has lots of medical problems. She has a dog just like Buffy. We can't imagine losing everything. We will put you in our prayers.Gods love to you. Look for the fun in everything and He will be with you always. I wish I had money to send but all of my money goes for gas to get to the doctors and the medicine that goes with it.God loves us all. We just have to give Him our worries and enjoy what we do have.

Buffy has the best of care. Dr. West and the people that work at the clinic in Mandeville at wonderful. Dr. West saved many pets and he and his partner have hearts of gold. The clinic in Mandeville has a staff that will cry with you as they did when they could not save our precious Dustin. Our two dogs and two cats have been a great support to us since our house burned and then the following year this storm did us in again. Miss Shirley, everything will be OK for you and Buffy. You are right - we will get through this.

Everyone...
While poor Andy is guilty of bad timing, I think he meant well (or at least I hope he did.) Yes, this is a VERY sad story and my heart goes out to Shirley, but I think Andy's theory might be somewhat right--in that we should find something about every situation to make us smile. If we take everything personally and let any and everything upset us, our lives would be so much shorter. I'm sure some of you don't wake up and say good morning to everyone, and to you it's no big harm. But in my family, that is one of the biggest insults a person can receive! Someone may make light of that, but it's not funny where i'm from.
In saying this, I think he was just trying to make us smile/laugh (in which it did for me) and there were no ill intentions.
Again, Andy, your timing was not exactly the best, however, I think if your sentence structure were better, you would not have offended as many as you did.
Shirley and others, please try to find a bit of sunshine in this "rain." Remember, God does not give us more than we can bear. :)
Ahvon, Central Florida (Sent Apr 4, 2006 8:10:03 PM)
Ahvon, Thank you for sharing with "everyone" the whole picture. I did enjoy the sentence structure remark. You do realize how patronizing you sound but I hope it was well meant and yes, there is sunshine brought by all who freely gave of themselves.
Cher, Chino, CA (Sent Apr 6, 2006 10:05:06 PM)
Shirley you have done a wonderful job by holding on strong. Keep up the good work. At the age of 70, you have come a long way. I give you a thumbs up.
Keep God on your side and you need not worry. As long has you have Him in your heart, you have nothing to worry about.
When there's a will, there is a way.
Yoyo, VA (Sent Apr 7, 2006 3:47:37 PM)
Was it the sentence structure or the punctuation and capitalization? Who cares? It was funny, not mean-spirited. Andy, thanks for making us laugh.
And for Mrs. Shirley, you remind me of my aunt Ollie, whom I dearly love. Her chihuahua is her baby and she takes her everywhere. Well, maybe not to church. My aunt is very independent, as you are, and I admire her so much. I admire you, too. God bless you and your children, as well as Buffy.
