Hancock County artists whose work will be included in the Washington, D.C., exhibit.

The accompanying photo may look like a bunch of ragtag artists but if you notice they all have big smiles on their faces. The reason for this is because these artists will have an exhibit of their artwork in a very prestigious gallery in Washington, D.C.

Thanks to a generous patron, the Foundry Gallery in Dupont Circle will host a month long exhibit of work by 26 artists from The Arts, Hancock County. This is an opportunity for these artists to sell their work – not simply display it. Since all but one art gallery in Bay St. Louis was destroyed by the hurricane, finding alternative venues to sell art is critical to their livelihood.

If you notice, the background in this photo is what is left of one of the buildings along the beachfront. Recovery in this part of town is extremely slow because most of the street and underlying infrastructure were completely washed away.

Our artists are back to work … whenever and wherever they can. Whenever they are not working on their homes or fighting with insurance companies on settlements that are being denied. Wherever they can find space … in FEMA trailers, garages, gutted houses, and, sometimes in an actual still standing, air conditioned studio if they are extremely lucky.

Yes, we may look like a bunch of rag tag artists but we are survivors! We are re-creating our lives, which in itself is a piece of work.

"rag-tag"?? I don't think so! I see beautiful people with a God given talent to bring beauty to life in a world, that in recent days, seems bleak and in need of beauty. Create away!

I miss each and every shop, restaurant, club, road and person in the Bay. I can't wait for that bridge to open so I can quickly get back to my second home.
Good luck to all of you.

Gwen....this being nice is Killing me....can we talk about road kill or something?

A wonderful photograph of artists with spirit. Yes, you are survivors! And it's inspiring to see you working together, perservering and creating again. Good luck and best wishes for a successful exhibit with lots of sales!

dem ragheads ain't artist's either......they will brobally block my post

The only painting I can accomplish with a degree of expertise is the walls of my house. I change colors every so often. I also sew. That is the extent of my artistic side. I admire those of you who are talented and who have developed their talents so well and who are strong enough to keep on keeping on. You are examples to all of us. Keep on keeping on.

When I see this photo and read the article I see many faces that I know and admire. And a few faces that I love very dearly. I just want to say thanks for all you do in Bay St. Louis. Pre Katrina and Post Katrina.

Hey all,
Just want to commend you on how well yall appear to be doing? Keep up the good work, and hopefully the costal mississippi area will be back with the welcoming smiles, and lively southern hospitality.
Take Care and be Well God Bless You all.........

What happened to the local newspaper?

The artists from Waveland are truly dedicated. I was in New Orleans in late May-early June, there were several artists set up at Lafitte Park in the Quarters for the Wednesday Nite concert. They traveled from Waveland, trucks and cars packed with their most beautiful art works, it truly touched my heart to see how dedicated they are, they talked and smiled and hopefully sold their artwork, then I watched as they carefully packed their vehicles for the ride back to Waveland,,,God Bless each and every one of you,,,one artist stands out in my mind,,,Lori Gordon, she had lots of angels in her art, "Angels from Waveland" That kinda says it all.

When will the works be featured at the DC gallery?

I lived on the MS Gulf Coast for over 25 years and Hurricane Katrina was the last straw for us.We packed up and headed up "North". I used to shop the local shops frequently in Pass Christian, Bay Saint Louis and Waveland and fortuntely I left before the storm with my treasures of art. These artisians always showed Southern Hospitality and Charm and I am so lucky to have these pieces of art and it brings tears to my eyes that so much was destroyed but I know that the Coast will rebuild and become stronger as a result.
